The sprouts were just starting to emerge. Two weeks later, they looked like this:
They leaf out quickly. But then you wait. And wait. And wait. For three weeks. Then they start to bloom. It's so exciting! Our peony was one of the first to bloom in the neighborhood and we got the first bloom on Monday.
Some people like to use a stakes to help hold their peonies upright. But the best thing about them, in my opinion, is once they start to topple over, I get to run outside and clip the blooms. Guilt free! Then I place them all around our pad.
Here they are hanging out in our new dormer.
Peony buds
For each peony bloom, there are about two or three buds attached to it that have not opened. Not wanting to be wasteful, I clip most of them off and place them in their own container. The buds are pretty on their own, but they will bloom. Once they do, I simply replace a wilted bloom in another vase with a fresh one from the bud vase. You gotta love blooms that keep on giving!

I absolutely love peonies - probably one of my favorite flowers out there. In fact, I just got some pale pink ones for the kitchen (at the store, since I don't have any in my yard)... Gorgeous. And really pretty flowers, too.

I am dying to plant some peonies once I torch my yard. Are they hard to grow? My thumb isn't green enough to try anything too fussy!
ReplyDeleteMary, I don't think they are hard to grow and from what I understand they live for a long time (50+ years). Ours came with the house and when we moved in in August, we chopped everything down because the flower beds were so overgrown and the following spring it bloomed abundantly. I haven't done anything to it since we've moved in and it seems to be doing well.
ReplyDeleteI bought a root/tuber from Lowes this year and planted that and so far nothing has happened but hopefully next year it'll grow (I don't exactly know when to plant them so I may have done it too late or early?).
Awww thats lovely
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful. I'm focusing on veggie gardening this year but I am determined to grow some pretty little things in my yard/garden next year as well.
