Today we have contractors coming to our house to give us roofing estimates. We hope that we've done our due diligence and have over estimated the cost of this project. For us, this is our most intimidating project to date and is by far the largest expenditure we've put into our house. Yeah, intimidating!
While doing a little internet research on the subject, we came across Owens Corning Roofing website. This site is fun! They have an interactive feature on their site called The DesignEyeQ Visualization Experience. It's addictive. Not only can you virtually see various roofs on your house, you can also sample siding, masonry and trim colors.
Let's take a look at what our house could look like in the near future, shall we?
Before:
The first possibility is very similar in color scheme as what we have now.
Or how about classic black?
Or maybe something completely different?
We're even toying around with the idea of having a metal roof on our two porches (we have another porch on the back corner of our house) and shingles on the rest of the house. The only thing we know for sure about our choice is that we will spring for dimensional shingles. Their pros (longer lifespan, more attractive) seem to outweigh their cons (cost slightly more than composition asphalt shingles). With our roof being such a prominent feature of our house, I think the extra expense will be worth it.
And just for fun, lets see what our house would look like with cedar shake siding.
Cute, huh?! I can totally picture our brick painted this color...you never know, we might just take that plunge. But in the meantime, it was fun to experiment.
By the way, did you all see Young House Love's post yesterday about the roofing color quiz on Owens Corning's site? Coincidentally, I was working on this post when I took a break and saw that they had beaten me to the punch with the color quiz. My quiz resulted in the color combo of yellow and brown. Weird. Those are not colors I gravitate to much. But I like the description...even if it's not quite me, I'd like to pretend parts of it is. And my roof color is Sand Dune. Let's see if my house agrees.
Eh, maybe just a bit too busy. Anyway, have any of you had the experience of getting a new roof? How was the process? Any tips you'd care to share?

oh, i love the mock up with the cedar...i want to paint our brick, but it's a matter of convincing the boyfriend. far down the road when the roof goes we have plans to raise the second story, so with siding on the top, i may change my mind about painting.
ReplyDeletei don't know, but does a darker roof make it hotter? something to think about...
We were lucky enough to find half of the shingles we needed for our pool house on Craigslist. I was also able to get the rest at my local supplier (the lot was still in production). I have to tell you these shingles are BY FAR better than the crappy 3 tab shingles on my own home roof. When I have extra cash, I am absolutely going to spend the money for an upgrade.

Thanks, Pine Tree Home! I didn't even think to use Craigslist for shingles but I'm looking into it.
ReplyDeleteI must say, I like the siding, as well. However, that would kind of ruin the name of the blog.
ReplyDeleteWe have tile. Never needs to be replaced, so in my 40 plus years, I've never been in a house that was re-roofed. As far as cost, I do know that they can go over your current roof, if it's the only layer. One more already on there, and they have to strip it down, which I'm assuming would be more expensive.
I'm kind of partial to the first one, even though it is similar to your current roof.
i like the look of the darker colour BUT that would make it hotter which would cost more to cool- especially if the other half of your attic isn't insulated. you probably should go with a lighter shade. -robin
ReplyDeleteaesthetically, I like the black the best; although the heating and all...
ReplyDeleteI've heard the tip about the covering one layer too. Just make sure they reinforce any soft spots and flashing issues.
I think charcoal roofs look best with red brick houses. A mix between black and gray. Good luck picking!
ReplyDeleteI love the black. But I'm always drawn to black, so I'm probably biased. : ) Can't wait to hear what you guys decide and what you learn from the process! We'll be replacing our roof soon...probably next year, so I'd love to learn from your experience!
ReplyDeleteWow! That's one good-looking country house you got there. The roof would probably look better if you use red brick shingles. They would match the exterior of the house perfectly.
