This room was constantly becoming our junk room. We'd clear it out, only to start another project and fill it back up again. Also, it doesn't help that this room has the largest closet in the house. Bryan's small wardrobe barely fits in our master bedrooms closet so this is where I keep my clothes. And by that, I mean that often times I do laundry and will put away Bryan's clothes (because we sleep in there ya know) and then put my clothes on the guest bed. So instead of using the larger closet, the bed was my closet. Not good! I knew that a little bit of prettiness would go a long way in keeping this room ready for guests at all times.
And since this was spur of the moment decorating (it took two hours from start to finish the night before our guests were due to arrive), I had to pull the room together using what was lying around the house (no time to go shopping!).
This was what the room looked like shortly after we moved in. We purchased the bed off of Craigslist (it was part of a set--the dresser and chest are currently in our master bedroom) and it came with a pair of lamps (one of which you can see in the picture below).
Also note the before picture of our floor--afters coming soon!
Eventually, I got around to painting the room (using the same paint that was used for our living room, dining room, hallway and kitchen--five gallon buckets go far!) and re-arranging the furniture. And, ummm, the picture below is the only picture I have after that effort. This was taken during during our mini bathroom makeover (the closet in this room is the access to the plumbing for the bathroom, so it was emptied--I won't say how long it stayed like this).
While the room didn't look quite this bad when I was cleaning up for our friends visit, it wasn't much better! :)
So, I shopped my house and this is what I ended up with.

I love the different views reflected from the mirror.
To make my guests extra comfortable, I tried to think set up the room to meet all of their needs. This includes:
*a pair of nightstands and lamps (so important! there is nothing worse than having to get out of bed to turn out the lights, plus it's nice to provide a place to set a water glass, eye glasses, books, cell phones, etc)
*magazines for those who like to read before shutting out the lights
*a vanity or in our case a mirror with shelf below it for setting down makeup and hair products (if you only have one bathroom, it is even more important to include!). I hung the mirror and shelf on the wall that I did because it contains an electrical outlet so guests can plug in a hair dryer.
*towels (I like to provide each guest with two bath towels, one wash cloth and one hand towel)
*a basket of trial size hair and bath products (I will be adding tooth brushes and tooth paste to the basket before our next over night guests arrive)
*a fan (we keep a simple box fan in the closet and let our guests know where it is in case they need it)--this is for those guests who get hot at night or need a little white noise.
I would also like to add a charging station to this room soon. With everybody having cell phones, it'll be nice to have a dedicated spot for their electronics.
Oh, and since this was a no money spent makeover, I thought it would be fun to break down the cost of the items in the room (because I realized after looking around how it was a collection of mostly free and cheap items).

Not too shabby for a room that has a cohesive look and came together by accident!

So obviously it's totally adorable but the price and the fact you pulled it together in two hours are ah-maz-ing. Seriously. I love all the colors you used!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of, do you mind if I ask what paint you used on the wall? I need/want to repaint my bedroom and am having the hardest time finding a good neutral.
yes, yes, love that neutral. what color is it? should i root around on your blog for it? what a great redo in no time at all!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mary! The color is Glidden's Sand White (which I copied from YHL after seeing it in their house). It really is a nice neutral color that changes with the light and has a nice grayish undertone--we've received a lot of compliments from people seeing it in person and they don't realize it's the same shade in all of the rooms.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed at what you did in a couple of hours! I guess it doesn't hurt that you had so many great pieces in your home to shop from :).
ReplyDeleteI love the mismatched nightstands.
ReplyDeleteKasey, it's funny that you say that because that's what I think when I see these kind of makeovers. I usually think, "yeah, but they don't have all the junk I have" but when I removed all the junk and saw what I had left over, it worked! But with that said, our attic bedroom is completely sparse now, haha!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Turling! It was a pleasant surprise to find they are the same height and scale and luckily the colors work together (the blue night stand was painted for the intention to be used on our front porch, but I like it so much better in here!).
ReplyDeleteHow adorable! What a cozy feel the space has now! I hope your guests enjoyed their stay. PS, I want to steal your black and white shoes.
ReplyDeleteLove your idea of using the mirror and a little shelf to create a vanity in the room. Great ideas and the bedroom looks great! xo
ReplyDeleteWhat a great quick room redo! I love the lamps and nightstands.
ReplyDeleteI love easy makeovers like this! It makes me feel like a room makeover is not so overwhelming and expensive!! Thanks! What color is the spray paint for the green nightstand? I would love to do my guestroom with a green theme!
ReplyDeleteThe Life of the Chous--Thanks for stopping by! I'm not sure the name of the spray paint, but I do know it's by Rustoleum (I painted it over a year ago but from what I remember it was the only bright green they had).
ReplyDeleteI love the new look- I also end up sticking stuff into the guest room- mostly because it is beside the laundry room and it ends up being a perfect room to sort laundry and hang to dry without being visible as the laundry room doubles as a through way to the garage.
ReplyDeleteWow, that was a fast redo. Sometimes a "oh no they are coming" moment kicks things into gear. I love the scale of that dresser. How about painting it white and adding some fun knobs or rope? It's so hard to find furniture that is smaller these days. I usually have to search high and low.
ReplyDeleteHope your friends enjoyed the room as much as we did.
Pine Tree--great idea for the dresser! I been mulling over ideas of what color to paint it. I was thinking white would be too stark but with rope pulls, it might just be the element needed to make it work. I'm really in love with that idea now!
ReplyDeleteEven though I have seen it before I am still amazed at the transformation (and at how much junk we were able to pile into the room!)
ReplyDeleteGreat job Karrie!
I love it all. It turned out so great. The green nightstand has to be my favorite!
ReplyDeleteIt looks very nice, I like the headboard, fabric art above it looks wonderful. The green side tables are cute
ReplyDeleteI *love* that headboard! I'm wondering what the matching dresser and chest looks like...
ReplyDeleteOverall the room looks super cute and the price is definitely right!
beautiful! love the piece you hung over the bed.
ReplyDeletethis is so inspiring! great job. (stumbled on your blog somehow... cheers!)
ReplyDeleteSwoon! I am absolutely in love and COMPLETELY jealous!!! This room looks so insanely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteKarrie, your guest bedroom update looks so lovely!! Amazing what you find in your own house, huh? I love the clean, simple and uncluttered look to this room. As a guest, I always appreciate rooms that offer a calm, quiet retreat.
ReplyDeleteYou have a lovely (and addicting!) blog, and I can't wait to read more. Thanks for reading b*spoke! It’s great to have you as a neighbor.
This looks really great! I love the kelly green side table. And, all this for less than $200? Impressed!
ReplyDeleteThe room is fabulous - as if collected over time, which to me is the best. That green nightstand has me giddy. Bright green spray paint by Rustoleum is on my list.

The mirror reminds me of the one I have in my room in NY. Your room is so simple, I love the uncrowded look. It's amazing how you did it in just hours! I'm almost done cleaning using some commercial products I bought from the store yesterday. With your work here as an inspiration, I think I have to disregard calling some services for my room makeover. Haha!
