A New Obsession

Oh goodness.  Bryan has really done it this time and I don't think he realizes the ramifications of his actions.  After years (yes, years) of talking about getting a DSLR, we finally bit the bullet and bought one.

And we're both obsessed.  After less than two weeks of owning it, we bought a second lens.  The nifty fifty as I hear it's called.

Here are my favorite pictures so far.  In the future I will show more restraint.  But since my postings have been so sporadic lately, I'll just throw all these pictures into one post. :)

Great fall decorating idea--found in neighbors yard.  Now vintage bike with basket is going on my wish list.

I had no idea lavender had little blossoms!  Our lavender is still going strong even with the cooler temps--I will be planting more next year.

We are almost to peak color (although a lot of the trees have already lost their leaves).

Currently displayed on our mantle.

And now, be prepared for an onslaught of Bindi pictures.  What can I say, she's our favorite subject.

And this might be my most favorite picture EVER!

Please feel free to pass along any tips you have for taking photos.  Or any websites you've found helpful for beginning photographers.

  1. hope you don't get this twice, but i don't think my other comment went thru.

you can't help but smile at that last picture! love it, and yay for better photography. sadly, that won't be a purchase i make for the blog tho. i just can't justify it, nor do i want to schlep it on any vacations we go on.

that large and in charge gnarly tree is amazing!!

  2. That was always my argument, too. I didn't want to carry around a large camera (and I certainly don't need it for my blog). Bryan spent a couple of years campaigning for one and since we're both interested, I finally caved. It's not as big and cumbersome as I thought it would be but I only see taking it out for outings when we want to take pictures (otherwise we'll keep our small digital with us).

Would you believe that I never noticed that tree before (even though I walk by it on a weekly basis) until I had the camera out looking for things to take a picture of. I feel like my eyes are open now. :)

  3. Tips? you don't need any tips, your pictures are awesome!! The last one should be entered in a photo contest somewhere!
I would love a new camera, I use a 75.00 point and shoot. How hard was it to get used to? Are you happy with your purchase?

  4. Lol, thanks Londen! It didn't take long to get used to using it (although using the view finder took a little getting used to). It has a nice auto mode that I default to when I just want to take a snapshot of something but around the house, I play around a lot with manual mode (which is going to take a bit of time learning). Mostly though I shoot in AV (aperture priority) and TV (shutter priority) mode which makes it fun to experiment with without getting too frustrated.

  7. ooo... I'm so excited for you. We love our dSLR, too. And, I've totally been thinking of buying the "nifty fifty." Now, I may need to. =)

I am not a good person to ask about books because I have a ton of them and havent' read them. But, I have been told multiple times to read the manual cover-to-cover as the number one tip. Also, there's an online tutorial that goes over one thing a week - 12 weeks to better photography - I've only done two weeks but it was really helpful.

    Good luck!

  8. Robin-that would have been a great Halloween costume for Bindi--maybe next year we'll have to hook her up with a magicians costume. The only story behind the picture is we were trying out the sports mode and Bryan picked her up and started "tossing" her up in the air and I got the pic. I think I have to print that one and frame it.
